He's So Ready

his wife died a year ago
he lives alone
he sits in the living room
with the tv on

he's become an expert on world events
yeah, he knows the weather
in every place on earth

and he's so ready to go
the mail is in, the gate is closed
there's nothing left he needs to know
yeah, he's so ready to go

a spider weaves its web
from the lamp to the phone
they're building mansions here
in my father's home

such tidy closets, room by room
last week they gave her clothes away
now she's gone, gone, gone

and he's so ready to go
the faucet drips, the shadows grow
there's nothing left he needs to know
yeah, he's so ready to go

his suitcase full of memories
waits by the door
it's been gathering dust now
a year and more
what's the point left in staying here alone?
so when is she coming to take him home?

he eats his cereal in the morning light
spoon by spoon and bite by bite
then it's back to bed for a little rest
of all life's pleasures
he likes sleep the best

and he's so ready to go
today would be a good day, as days go
there's nothing left he needs to know, no, no
yeah, he's so ready to go…
yeah, he's so ready to go…
